Description
The Astrolabe plays an important role in the region of the Middle East as the Astrolabe is named after a Mariam “Al-Astrolabiya” Al-Ijliya, who crafted astrolabes as an apprentice with her father.
We propose an event that is both educational and fun and not only allows the KAUST community to learn about the science of the astrolabe, which is featured in the MOSTI (https://in-the-sky.org/astrolabe/model_bits.png), as well as the history, but also the practical ability to use the astrolabe to find information such date, time of day and location.
You will have the chance to use the astrolabe after the screening of the film, Into the Empty Quarter. It will be between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM in collaboration with the Astronomy SDG who will give a bit of background on where in the sky you will be looking and how to use the stars to configure the astrolabe. You will be able to take your astrolabes home to continue to use.
