As part of the 2017 Enrichment in the Spring Program, KAUST will host a series of workshops led by Mbongeni Buthelezi, an artist from South Africa who transforms recycled plastic into art. The Enrichment team invites the Art Perspective Group, The KAUST School, the Fine Arts Group, Students and the community to take part in these workshops that aim to create final collaborative artworks that will be presented during Earth Day on Thursday, April 20.
Mbongeni Buthelezi looks at this event as an important dialogue/ platform to exchange some artistic ideas and sharing of experiences between his nation and Saudi Arabia. About the coming experience at KAUST, he says: "When I started experimenting with plastics in my art way back in 1991as a young art student, I never thought or looked at myself as someone who will be the world's first artist to paint with plastics today. It has always been my wish to share my artistic experiences with the world using one of the most simplest materials to make art. It is of utmost importance to note that my art is not only about the beauty of the images that I create using predominantly recycled but it's also a creative way to reuse waste from going to the environment."
Mbongeni Buthelezi
Mbongeni Buthelezi is an artist works and resides in Johannesburg, South Africa. He started painting with plastics in 1991 when he was still a young student at the African Institute of Art in Soweto.
He held many solo and group shows in many parts of the world including New York, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Cairo London and many more. He also took part in a string of prestigious art residencies: the world kicker Vermont Studio Artists Center, Art Omi, Sylt Foundation, Dusseldorf and more. He participated in many museums shows, Museum for African Art New York, Pretoria Museum, Durban Art Gallery, Johannesburg Art Gallery (Mid career retrospective exhibition), Red Location Museum and more.
He has a lot of work in both public and private collections from museums, galleries across the globe. He has done some big commissioned artworks for hotels and private houses the biggest being 35 m x 4m.
