Description
A keynote lecture by Mark Kendall, Entrepreneurial Professor at the Australian National University.
Industrial revolutions are defined by both the technological advances that drive them and the major effects these advances have on society. The first industrial revolution, starting in the 1800s, was driven by steam power, which led to railways opening up travel and trade; in the early 1900s, the second industrial revolution was driven by electricity; more recently, it has been the internet, the computer, and the digital age.
Now we have the fourth revolution — which is many revolutions at once, driven by fields ranging from nanotechnology and nanomedicine, the internet of things, robotics, and genetic engineering to crypto-currencies and artificial intelligence. This will be the big disrupter, not just because of the speed and the magnitude of the changes facing us — but because the world will be dealing with not one major technological change but a whole range of changes happening
at once, in parallel.
Within this context, healthcare is rapidly accelerating towards genuinely personalized medicine. In this presentation, Mark will discuss how this field has progressed and project forward to what could be coming as new personalized medicine advances.
He will underpin this discussion with his own experiences and learnings: starting like a rocket scientist more than 20 years ago, and progressing through fields of immunology and vaccinology, and now spearheading next-generation wearable devices for precision medicine (called Microwearables).
Mark Kendall is a 2012 Awards for Enterprise Rolex Laureate for pioneering efforts to expand knowledge and improve human life.
