Description
Artist and designer Nadya Suvorova exchanged and developed ideas with researchers of the Division for Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Sciences and Engineering (CEMSE) at KAUST for a three-month period in autumn 2018.
Join us on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. for the exhibition opening of Nadya’s artistic work at KAUST and a guided tour with the artist, where she will present her work and will talk about her artistic exchange experience at KAUST, the creative process, and her experience working with scientists.
Hidden dimensions of light showcase the results of Nadya Suvorova’s 3-month artist-in-labs residency at the KAUST Visual Computing Center.
Nadya will present a series of objects and experiments that reveal polarized light to the human eye through the realization of light-gathering instruments. Polarisation vision is used by a number of creatures such as mantis shrimps, cephalopods, honeybees, and desert ants for both navigation and communication. However, human beings are almost blind to it without the aid of optical devices. Together with scientists from the Computational Imaging Group, she participated in research experiments and exchange ideas about potential and methods of polarization imaging. In collaboration with the lab and the workshops of KAUST, she developed experimental optical scenarios to be experienced during the exhibition.
At KAUST, Nadya was working closely with research scientist Qiang Fu, whose research interests lie in the multi-disciplinary area of computational imaging, which aims at designing next-generation imaging systems (photography, microscopy, etc.) with a joint optics/computation method, and Ph.D. Student Simeng Qiu, KAUST Visual Computing Center.
This exchange was supervised at KAUST by Professor Dr. Wolfgang Heidrich - Visual Computing Center Director - and organized by the Artists-in-Labs Program -The Institute for Cultural Studies in the Arts (ICS)- in collaboration with the Office of Enrichment Programs at KAUST. With the support of the Division for Computer, Electrical and Mathematical Sciences and Engineering (CEMSE) at KAUST and the KAUST Library.

Nadya Suvorova
Nadya is an interactive media artist based in Zurich. At the intersection of art, science and play, she invents poetic journeys using emerging technologies. She pulls her inspiration from the observation of the natural world. Her interactive works spark curiosity to playfully engage access to and awareness of our natural world through digital media. She has shown her work internationally at the ZKM Karlsruhe, Cité du Design at Saint Etienne, Museum of Arts (MoA) Seoul, Hammer Museum etc.
