Innovating in today’s world is becoming an essential trait for tomorrow’s jobs. This 3-day course will help students understand the fundamentals of Innovation & Entrepreneurship to build tomorrow’s technologies. Session topics will cover: What is Innovation & Entrepreneurship?, Where ideas come from?, and What does it take to transform an idea into reality?
About this 3-day course:
This interactive course will take nine hours course over three days of introductory learning experience about how to design new products and services. The course will cover idea discovery through to what it takes to transform an idea into reality.
Program details:
January 13 | 9:00 am-12:00 pm | What is Innovation & Entrepreneurship?
Learn the fundamentals of innovation & entrepreneurship to transform technology into new products and services.
January 14 | 9:00 am-12:00 pm | Where ideas come from?
This session explores the ideation process and how ideas are generated. We then stress test those ideas before they are prototypes. Learn how to think outside the box by initiating new ideas and accepting and overcoming failures.
January 15 | 9:00 am-12:00 pm | What does it take to transform an idea into reality?
This session will introduce the methodology of taking an idea to market-ready products or services. Students will utilize the design thinking process - focusing on user empathy, collaboration and experimentation.

Bulent Erbilgin
Dr. Erbilgin has extensive academic experience teaching entrepreneurship courses at Northeastern University and University of California, Berkeley and leadership positions at different corporates and startups successfully releasing products in the market. Most recently Dr. Erbilgin lead the Security Software Development effort at Workday. These security products are used by the Workday ERP suite and span from encryption, Key Management System, Certificate Authority, Authentication, to IAM (Identity and Access Management). Dr. Bulent Erbilgin has over two decades of industry experience in technology and executive roles. Dr. Erbilgin holds a M.S. in Computer Engineering and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.
Eric Martin
Eric Martin graduated from KAUST in December 2010 as part of the University’s first graduating class with a master’s degree in environmental science and engineering, and describes himself as “a millennial, an entrepreneur and a family first kind of guy.”
He joined KAUST in 2009 from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he studied mechanical engineering. During his time at KAUST, he also helped establish and manage the University’s VentureLab accelerator program.
Martin currently finds himself in the middle of a new chapter in his professional career, having recently made the switch from product and engineering to sales. He now works as an account executive as part of a sales team for a venture capital-backed tech company called DataFox based in Silicon Valley.
Hattan Ahmed
Hattan currently leads the Entrepreneurship Center at KAUST, delivering the university’s entrepreneurship vision. He believes in young people as change agents of the future and that universities play a key role in creating national economic impact. In his role as an advocate for innovation, Hattan works across the entire entrepreneurship ecosystem in the Kingdom, delivering entrepreneurship training, creating corporate innovation programs, and accelerating startups that will contribute to the national transformation agenda. Hattan has a diverse background in industry, startups and academia. As a startup co-founder, he brings a successful entrepreneurial background to his role, having navigated early stage growth to acquisition. He has received multiple entrepreneurial awards on both a national and international scale. He also brings a rich background in Information Technology to his role, with experience in system design development and implementation within industries ranging from oil and gas, travel and retail.
