Intellectual property (IP) protection is essential to foster innovation. For the protection of important technology for commercialization, a strong and enforceable patent is required. Hence, scientists and engineers need to be aware of the basics of intellectual property protection to avoid the simplest pitfalls.
About this one-day event divided into a morning and afternoon session
This event provides a practical training opportunity to enhance our understanding of IP. It aims at enriching and broadening the knowledge and experience of graduate students, scholars, faculty, along with community members on the importance of IP.
It will provide answers to various questions, such as: What is IP? Why is it important? What are the challenges and issues that may affect research and innovation in all fields?

Janis Tyhurst
Janis Tyhurst is the Senior Subject Specialist at KAUST’s library. She liaises with the CEMSE faculty to develop collections, resources and programs in addition to providing instruction for these areas. She has developed targeted seminar training for students and researchers on resources in respective areas highlighting value of patent and business resources for research and intellectual property (IP) development.
Mardson Mcquay
Mardson McQuay is Associate General Counsel and Senior IP Attorney at KAUST. He is a former tenured professor of Mechanical Engineering at Brigham Young University and Senior VP and Chief IP Counsel at CGG, France. He also spent four years as an Associate in a law firm and five years as a Senior IP attorney at GE. He has been an invited lecturer on the topic of IP all over the world.
Steven duBois
Steven M. duBois is a managing partner with the firm of Patent Portfolio Builders PLLC. His practices are in the areas of patent monetization, patent preparation and prosecution, patent opinions and patent licensing in the electrical and computer technologies. He has more than twenty-five years of experience in the patent field including corporate, law firm and government positions. Prior to founding Patent Portfolio Builders, he was the Chief Patent Counsel for a start-up optical networking company. In this capacity, Steve expanded the company’s patent portfolio by over fifty applications within one year.
