Description
Dr. Noor will discuss challenges with starting as a new faculty member, many of which draw from his book "You're Hired Now What: A Guide for New Science Faculty". He will go over some less-visible mechanics of the job, challenges and strategies around overseeing research personnel, navigating new teaching and service roles, and how tenure decisions are made. Time will be available for Q&A and discussion.
Mohamed Noor
Mohamed Noor is a professor of Biology and Dean of Natural Sciences at Duke University. His research focuses on evolutionary genetics using Drosophila fruit flies, and he teaches courses in genetics and evolution both at Duke and online. He is a former department chair and also chaired the university's promotion and tenure committee. He has also held a number of scientific society roles including president of the Society for the Study of Evolution as well as the American Genetic Association, and he served as editor-in-chief of the journal "Evolution".
