General audience lecture: Our current communications infrastructure is based in fiber optics for long-haul signal distribution and RF wireless for mobile access. So how does optical wireless communications fit in, and what can it do for us? In this lecture we discuss how various types of optical wireless systems can integrate into existing infrastructure to provide enhanced services for both stationary and mobile applications. We then discuss how one might design a hybrid RF/optical system to exploit the advantages provided by each technology. Technical tutorial: The general audience lecture will be followed by a technical tutorial appropriate for researchers and graduate students in electrical engineering. In this portion of the talk we delve deeper into the design of optical wireless communication systems, with an emphasis on modulation and signal processing. We discuss the similarities and highlight the differences between optical wireless, fiber optics, and RF systems. Fundamental device and channel physical limitations are exposed to guide design principles. The talk concludes with a summary of current research activities at the University of Virginia.Maite Brandt-Pearce
Dr. Maïté Brandt-Pearce is a professor in the Charles L. Brown Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Virginia. She received her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Rice University in 1993. Her research interests include nonlinear effects in fiber-optics, free-space optical communications, cross-layer design of optical networks subject to physical layer degradations, body area networks, and radar signal processing. Dr. Brandt-Pearce is the recipient of an NSF CAREER Award and an NSF RIA. She is a co-recipient of Best Paper Awards at ICC 2006 and GLOBECOM 2012. She serves on the editorial board of IEEE Communications Letters, IEEE/OSA Journal of Optical Communications and Networks, and Springer Photonic Network Communications. She was co-editor of a book entitled Cross-Layer Design in Optical Networks, Springer Optical Networks Series, 2013. She was the General Chair of the Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems & Computers in 2009 and the Chair of the Optical Wireless Workshop at GLOBECOM 2013.
