Description
This seminar looks at the practice of mining in modern-day Saudi Arabia. The seminar will be divided into 3 parts 2:00 p.m. Welcome and Introduction by Prof. Martin Mai 2:10 p.m. Dr. Abdullah Al Jehani, Saudi Geological Survey (1/2h) The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a large variety of metallic and non metallic resources that range in size and value from occurrences of limited potential to deposits large enough to sustain profitable exploitation. Most metallic-mineral resources are located in Precambrian rocks of the Arabian Shield exposed in the western half of the Kingdom. Base and precious-metal occurrences typically concentrate in different parts of this region reflecting different, favorable geologic environments, forming mineral districts. Where the industrial rocks and mineral are consentrated in the sedimentary cover rocks in the eastern side of the Arabian Shield. 2:45 p.m. Ayman Badera, Ma'aden Gold & Base Metals Co. Ayman Badera will look at the geology of the mahad mine (known as King Suliman's mine) and how production from this mine has increased up to 3.4 MOZ. (30 min) 3:30 p.m. Panel Discussion with Dr. Ramdohr and Prof. Martin Mai Q&A Introduction , conclusion by Prof. Martin MaiAbdullah Al Jehani
Abdullah Al Jehani is the Director of Mineral Exploration at the Saudi Geological Survey, Jeddah. He received his Bachelor in Geology (B.Sc.) in 1992 from King Abdulaziz University Jeddah, Faculty of Earth Science, and subsequently joined the French Geological Survey (BRGM-Mission) as Exploration Geologist in the mineral exploration sector. In 1995 he was appointed to the Deputy Ministry for Mineral Resources as Exploration Geologist. Mr. Al-Jehani then joined the Saudi Geological Survey in 2000, working there in various positions. In 2007, he was appointed as Assistant of the Metallic Minerals Division, and was promoted to the Head of the Metallic Minerals Division in 2008. He also served as the Head to the Mineral Occurrence Documentation System unit in 2011. In 2013, he was appointed as assistant of Director of Mineral exploration, and in 2014 became the Director of Mineral exploration, the position that he is currently still serving in.
Ayman Badirah
Ayman is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Engineering Geology from King Abdulaziz University, and is the Operations Director of Ma’aden Gold and Base Metals Co. (MGBM), a subsidiary of the Saudi Arabian Mining Co. (Ma’aden). Being a member of the International Academy of Project Management, Ayman is a Certified Business Operations Professional with over 18 years of extensive experience in the mining industry. Before he was appointed to his current position as Operations Director, Ayman has served the Company as Senior Geologist, and in 2005, he received an Award of Recognition for his valuable contribution in extending the life of Mahd Ad Dahab Mine for another 10 years. He also served as Al-Amar Mine Manager for which he was responsible in significantly exceeding the mine’s gold production targets during his term.
Martin Mai
Professor Mai's research interests include the physics of earthquakes and the resulting complexity of earthquake phenomena, as seen, for instance, through earthquake-source imaging and dynamic rupture modeling. Mai's work extends to strong ground motion properties and near-source broadband wavefield simulations that include seismic wave scattering in heterogeneous media. He is also interested in earthquake engineering and seismic hazard analysis, and the application of innovative seismology tools in these fields. In this context, his work spans from fundamental earthquake physics to applied earthquake engineering.
Reinhard Paul Ramdohr
After matriculation in 1957 I worked one year as trainee in German mines. In 1963 I obtained the mining engineering degree at the Clausthal School of Mines. This was followed by two and a half years with Freudenberg Group in Germany, building water treatment plants, before joining Sentinel Mining Company in West Australia, searching for iron ore. 1968 Ph.D. in Geology at Heidelberg University in Germany. The following years I spent as base metal exploration geologist on various projects in South Australia before joining Aquitaine Australia Minerals as Project geologist in NT and WA. This work involved all levels of exploration for base metals, gold and uranium. I was instrumental in the discovery of the Sorby Hills lead deposit. Exploration in Germany and Kanada, USA and Sambia for Preussag AG from 1976 to 1978. From 1978 to 1990 I worked again with the Freudenberg Group for investment planning and control. During this period I was involved in industrial projects in Brazil, exploration projects in Senegal and Guinea. Since 1991 I am working as an independent consultant on various projects, e.g. from 1995 to 1998 for the German GTZ to promote small scale gold mining projects in Ghana. Later on RE targets in Ethiopia, fluorite in Mongolia etc. From 2001 to 2010 I did exploration work in Madagascar, including four years as U – exploration manager with Pan African Mining Corp. 2010 to 2013 Director for High River Gold Exploration Burkina SARL and Jilbey Burkina SARL in Burkina Faso. 2014 Freelance Geologist. Publications on sapphire deposits in Madagascar and a copper deposit in South Australia. Several posters at international geol. conferences and many geol. presentations.
