Exhibit from January 13 to 24: Photographers Marina Kochetyga and Andrea Bachofen traveled to Al-Balad together and walked the same route, taking photos of the historic architecture. The results vary according to these two photographers' unique angles and artistic interpretations of the buildings. Andrea and Marina have created photographic images of the beauty and the fragility of this historic architectural gem in old Jeddah. Also on display will be a short video by Dr. Lorenzo Pareschi, a visiting professor to KAUST from the University of Ferrara (Italy), documenting a large fire that affected a portion of a neighborhood of Al-Balad. This video shows the collapse of one of the buildings which Andrea photographed intact only a few days earlier. Some of the photos will be framed with wooden scraps collected from the garbage bins of Al-Balad. This shows that all that remains of some of the buildings are pieces of rubble now used to make the photos' frames, and offers an integration of the real-life building materials with the buildings' images.
