Description
In the year 77AH, the caliph 'Abd Al Malik bin Marwan undertook a coinage reform in the young Caliphate. He replaced all coins based on earlier empires (Persia, Byzantium) that were circulating in the Caliphate by a standardized and purely calligraphic set of denominations -- the Dinar, the Dirhem and the Fals. This lecture will explain this event of tremendous historic importance in relation to the identity of the Caliphate (and the Arab world), augmented with many pictures and authentic physical examples from the lecturer's collection. This event is part of our Brown bag Lecture Series. A light lunch will be provided.Jens Schneider
