Description
This workshop is part of a global training program known as the Advancing Research & Capacity in Hydrologic Education & Science Program (ARCHES), intended to build the capacity of young researchers to conduct hydrological science. This program aims to enable student scientists to more effectively perform high level research that will ultimately improve quality of life, enhance science-based decision making, and facilitate economic growth. It has been designed to train and educate students in the MENA region on water resources using an integrated hydrogeology, modeling, and remote sensing/GIS approach. The ARCHES workshop will feature two broad interlinked sets of activities across four sessions: The first activity involves developing technical expertise. Students will become proficient in using software for GIS, remote sensing, and mathematical modeling. In particular, we intend to transfer state-of-the-art technologies and applications developed by Drs. Milewski and Fryar over the past 10 years. These involve the integration of field-based hydrogeology with remote sensing/GIS, and hydrologic modeling for developing techniques for assessing water resources. The second activity involves developing professional contacts and skills. We will provide guidance in research ethics, in preparing presentations for technical audiences and the general public, and in preparing research proposals and publications. http://arches.wrrs.uga.eduAdam Milewski
Dr. Milewski is an Assistant Professor of Water Resources at the Department of Geology, University of Georgia, Georgia USA. His research work focuses primarily on complex and interrelated geologic and environmental problems using field-based data, remote sensing techniques, and numerical models. His research weaves three interconnected threads related to water resources: addressing issues pertaining to the sources, distribution, sinks, fluxes, and mechanisms of groundwater recharge; development and assessment of hydrologic models to quantify, forecast, and better understand water resources; and advancing the science of satellite applications in hydrology and geology. Dr. Milewski received several national and international awards of excellence and participated in various conferences worldwide. http://wrrs.uga.edu
Alan Fryar
Dr. Fryar's research integrates physical and chemical hydrogeology to address several overlapping themes: recharge and chemical evolution of groundwater in regional sedimentary aquifers; transport and fate of contaminants in groundwater; groundwater-stream interactions; and water-resource issues in developing countries. He and his collaborators incorporate field work and modeling in environments that range from semi-arid temperate to humid tropical, including the midcontinent USA, the Middle Atlas of Morocco, and the Ganges and Mekong valleys of south Asia.
