Description
As research funding is harder to come by and people’s attention span is getting shorter, it has become more important to create engaging visuals to effectively communicate your research ideas and discoveries. In this workshop, you will learn the essential techniques to create engaging visuals for your publications, proposals, presentations, and website. You will be exposed to professional computer graphics tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Maxon Cinema 4D, and learn how to use them efficiently for your research. The workshop will includes 3 sections: Section 1: Creating 2D illustrations with Adobe Illustrator and learning basic image editing techniques with Adobe Photoshop. Section 2: Creating 3D illustrations and animations with Maxon Cinema 4D and learning basic compositing techniques with Adobe After Effects. Section 3: Introduction to taking photos and videos in the lab. Details of any preparation work: To take full advantage of this workshop, attendees should have following applications installed in their laptop computers that can be brought to the workshop: Adobe Illustrator CS6 or higher version Adobe Photoshop CS6 or higher version Adobe After Effects CS6 or higher version Adobe Premiere CS6 or higher version Maxon Cinema 4D Studio R14 or higher version These applications could be purchased at a very low academic price. University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) Yan Liang is a scientific illustrator and animator. To him, science is beautiful and full of wonders, especially at the small scale that cannot be seen by the naked eye. After receiving his doctoral degree in materials science from the University of Minnesota in 2011, he started a career where he combines his scientific knowledge and artistic skills to visualize the beauty of science. Yan has worked with over 30 research groups in the world, including groups from Harvard, MIT, Cornell, Stanford, and Caltech. His works have been published on covers of many scientific journals including Science, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Chemical Biology, PNAS, Nano Letters, Trends in Biotechnology, and Advanced Materials.
