Description
Angklung is a traditional Indonesian musical instrument made of bamboo. In each piece, there are two tubes attached to a frame, and each has a particular pitch. Each performer in an Angklung ensemble will play just one or two notes, but playing together complete melodies are produced. In 2009 – 2010, the Indonesian students at KAUST had an Angklung ensemble, which performed to the KAUST community a few times with the last performance at the In-House International Concert in December 2010, receiving a standing ovation. For WEP 2014, we would like to bring Angklung back and create a new Angklung ensemble, which will consist not only of nationals from Indonesia, but also anyone in the KAUST community who is interested. Angklung is a very easy musical instrument to learn for anyone who has an interest, and this makes it an ideal WEP activity. By playing Angklung, you will not only perform music, but participants will also learn about cooperation, discipline, accuracy, and responsibility as each Angklung instrument performs just like a musical instrument in an orchestra. By the end of the activity, we hope to have a small concert performed by the WEP Angklung Workshop participants. After WEP, throughout the year, we hope that interested participants can continue to practice in the Angklung ensemble created during these workshops and together with Office of the Arts, arrange for mini concerts to the community from time to time. Come learn a new skill that you can continue to practice and enjoy even after WEP!
